What happened
The World Bank financed the Southern Africa TB and Health Systems Support Project in Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia from 2016 to 2024. Lesotho set up community-based management of tuberculosis in three districts. Health workers based in villages raised awareness and referred cases, and outreach teams offered integrated screening for TB and other conditions. Mobile trucks carried digital chest X-rays with artificial intelligence to remote areas. In a review dated 23 April 2025, the World Bank's Independent Evaluation Group writes that the trucks brought services to remote populations. It found that they reduced the need for travel and averted high out-of-pocket expenditures. The reviewers cite an evaluation by the East, Central and Southern Africa Health Community, one of the project's two regional coordinating bodies. Its evaluators found that TB treatment coverage rose to 60 percent, against a national average of 32 percent. These figures cover the whole community package. The reviewers name no AI product, give no count of people screened on the trucks and do not separate the AI's part.
