What happened
French public accountants check payment requests before the state pays. The Direction générale des Finances publiques (DGFiP) built TAAP to point them to the riskiest requests. It combines business rules with a model trained on the previous three years of check results, and it keeps learning. The aim was to check 30% fewer requests while finding more errors. At the end of 2023, after three years of use, the DGFiP reported that checked requests had fallen by 31.9%. Errors were found in 6.16% of requests, against 2.55% before the system. On requests that the AI analyzed, the rate was 8.53%, against 1.65% in the year before TAAP. In observations published on 21 January 2025, the Cour des comptes concluded that the software is an effective aid to accounting services. The figures come from the DGFiP's own assessment.
