"account": "Gwen Sheldon reported for Virginia Tech on 20 October 2026 on a one-year Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) pilot that ended in September 2026. It ran on Route 460 near Grundy in Southwest Virginia, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) as part of the Corridor Q expansion. Eight portable solar-powered trailers with thermal cameras were installed on a 750-meter section of a 14-mile corridor that is home to about 100 elk. AI software from Crosstek analyzed the camera feeds. When wildlife was detected, dynamic message signs told motorists that wildlife had been detected ahead and to slow down. T-Mobile provided 5G and satellite links. The system achieved 97 percent overall accuracy in identifying medium and large wildlife. The initial analysis found an average speed reduction of 3 mph as vehicles approached activated signs. The report gives detection accuracy and driver speeds but no result on collisions or fatalities prevented. WCYB had reported the test on 19 November 2025. Its separate interview with Michelle Earl of VDOT describes animal detection and communication with the message boards. The measured results come from VTTI's own report. WCYB's earlier interview establishes deployment context, not independent verification of those results. VDOT names the pilot the Animal Detection and Driver Warning System (ADDWS). Its project page identifies VTTI as the research partner. Virginia Tech’s results report identifies Crosstek as the camera and AI-software supplier.",
