"account": "Microsoft added Inuktitut text translation to Microsoft Translator, Office and Translator for Bing on 27 January 2021. The date is from Arctic Portal, relaying the Microsoft Translator blog. Microsoft worked with the Government of Nunavut for language data; Inuktitut speakers volunteered to validate and test translations. VICE (18 February 2021) reported Nunavut language officials finding the output “riddled with mistakes”. Solomon Awa said: “Sometimes it's close, but sometimes it gave the opposite meaning, or one that was misleading”. Languages commissioner Karliin Aariak called it “a great tool to be like a first step”. Retired Université Laval researcher Louis-Jacques Dorais called it a “tour de force” despite a wrong test sentence. Nunatsiaq News (28 February 2022) reported Inuinnaqtun and romanized Inuktitut added during Uqausirmut Quviasuutiqarniq. Fewer than 600 speak Inuinnaqtun fluently, per the Kitikmeot Heritage Society. Microsoft's own feature (1 February 2022) says “Text translation is based on neural machine translation models”. It says the Government of Nunavut “turned to the community to help build and test the language models”. It lists intended uses (unilingual patients communicating with doctors, younger people with elders, emails in Office) without data. Nunatsiaq News (9 December 2024) reported the 5 December launch of Inuktitut text-to-speech voices “Taqqiq” and “Siqiniq”. They were built from thousands of government documents, hired speakers' recordings and Bible Society and Nunavut Inuit Heritage Trust audio. The report noted presenters' accounts of the translator confusing “condo and condom, and prime rib and prime minister”. Voice contributor Leah Ayaruaq McKay said she plans to use it to help her husband learn Inuktitut. Government of Nunavut web pages were not available and are not among the sources. No cited source measures use, accuracy or an outcome for any user.",
