"account": "Te Hiku Media, a charitable iwi media and technology organization in Kaitaia, New Zealand, built its own te reo Māori automatic speech recognition. MIT Technology Review (22 April 2022) described a ten-day community competition in 2018. It collected “310 hours of speech-text pairs from some 200,000 recordings made by roughly 2,500 people”. From that, bootstrapping an open-source Mozilla model, “Te Hiku created its very first te reo speech recognition model with 86% accuracy”. The tools are offered through the Papa Reo platform. NVIDIA's blog (16 January 2024) says the model “transcribes te reo Māori with 92% accuracy” using the NeMo toolkit. An RNZ release of 11 September 2024 quotes Te Hiku chief executive Peter-Lucas Jones in te reo giving the same 92% figure. The University of Auckland announced on 18 March 2024 that its Archive of Māori and Pacific Sound is working with Te Hiku Media. They are testing it on archival recordings with different dialects, recording qualities and sung forms. Automatic output is compared “against human-generated ones”, with results to be shared with the galleries, libraries, archives and museums sector. It says the tool “is performing very well for their purposes” in Te Hiku's broadcasting arm. RNZ and Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision agreed in September 2024 to supply previously broadcast te reo recordings to train and review the tools. No cited source reports a measured outcome for a speaker, learner or archive user. The accuracy figures originate with Te Hiku Media and NVIDIA.",

The accuracy figures originate with Te Hiku Media and NVIDIA."
