"account": "Ricardo Gonzalez Penuela, Jazmin Collins, Cynthia Bennett and Shiri Azenkot (Cornell Tech and Google) ran a two-week diary study. It had 16 blind and low-vision adults in the United States (five men, 11 women, aged 24 to 67). Recruitment was via National Federation of the Blind mailing lists. They used an iPhone scene-description app the researchers built on Microsoft's Azure AI Vision image description application programming interface (API). It was chosen because it “exposes the latest deep learning algorithms”. Seeing AI also uses it. Participants submitted 354 entries (13 to 39 each). Documented uses include P1 photographing glasses. She “was not sure if this was my husband's sunglasses or my old pair of reading glasses from 4 years ago”. She got an answer without calling him. P5 photographed a hotel bed to check his roommate was not in it, and P15 photographed wine bottles in a shop rather than touching them. Participants scored descriptions 2.76 out of 5 for satisfaction and 2.43 out of 4 for trust on average. The authors say satisfaction did not track accuracy because users inferred information from partially correct descriptions. The paper appeared at CHI 2024 (doi 10.1145/3613904.3642211). The arXiv version was submitted on 22 March 2024. The study dates are not reported. The CHI EA 2025 follow-up used a custom app, VisionPal, and documented failures such as hallucinated braille labels.",

The CHI EA 2025 follow-up used a custom app, VisionPal, and documented failures such as hallucinated braille labels."
