"account": "Van den Beuken, Tuinman, Nideröst, Goossen, van Schuppen, Loer, Schwarte and Schober reported in Resuscitation Plus on 29 January 2026. They are of Amsterdam UMC with Utek B.V. and MiBida (the HEART-SAFE project's partners). The event is undated. They call it the first detailed description of automated detection of a spontaneous, non-procedural cardiac arrest from consumer smartwatch data. An 82-year-old man with a right cerebellar hemorrhage and documented do-not-resuscitate directives was moved to palliative care. After about 42 hours life-sustaining treatment was withdrawn, and he died about 1.5 hours later. With the family's consent a Samsung Watch5 Pro was placed on his right wrist about 40 minutes after withdrawal. Electrocardiogram (ECG), invasive arterial pressure and clinical photoplethysmography (PPG) served as reference. The green-light PPG signal was later run through the group's previously described algorithm. It analyzes five-second windows using peak detection with minimum-amplitude safeguards. It flagged circulatory arrest when the ECG showed agonal bradycardia with the monitor reading 0/min and mean arterial pressure had fallen to 9 mmHg. Low-amplitude oscillations at about 30 per minute persisted at that point. It produced no false alarms over the observation period. The authors state that the algorithm was applied retrospectively. They say they chose not to run it live on the device, because it is still in development and to avoid alarms disturbing the family. They state that the controlled end-of-life setting does not represent out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Their 2025 proof-of-principle study (Resuscitation; abstract read) reported 28 of 31 circulatory arrests identified. The subjects were volunteers with cuff-restricted arm flow, cardioplegic surgery patients and slaughtered swine. Alerts were delivered to the HartslagNu test environment. Samsung is not an author. The source text describes peak detection, not machine learning.",

"summary": "Amsterdam UMC case: a Samsung Watch5 Pro worn after treatment withdrawal captured PPG; the HEART-SAFE algorithm, run afterwards, marked circulatory arrest in step with the ECG; the patient died.",
"account": "Van den Beuken, Tuinman, Nideröst, Goossen, van Schuppen, Loer, Schwarte and Schober reported in Resuscitation Plus on 29 January 2026. The source text describes peak detection, not machine learning."
