"account": "Edgar, Jansen, Pol, Pisters, van Royen and Bonnes of Radboud University Medical Center (with Rijnstate Hospital) reported in Resuscitation Plus on 29 January 2026. The paper gives no calendar date for the event. They report the first real-life cardiac arrest captured by a wristband with cardiac-arrest detection. A 64-year-old man with heart failure, permanent atrial fibrillation and a secondary-prevention Biotronik ICD was wearing the CE-certified CardioWatch 287–2 (Corsano Health, The Hague). He wore it in the DETECT-3 study. After three weeks, while cycling alone, he developed monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT). It accelerated to ventricular fibrillation (VF) after an antitachycardia pacing burst. The ICD delivered a 40 J shock. He regained consciousness, cycled home, and was admitted for rhythm observation with a good recovery. The wristband's 32 Hz photoplethysmography and accelerometry data were exported afterwards. A Corsano Health data scientist blinded to the event ran them through the DETECT photoplethysmography algorithm. It detected cardiac arrest at 09:50:17 after loss of pulse. It ended the alert at 09:50:57 when pulsations returned. The group's fall-detection algorithm flagged the fall about 8–10 seconds after pulselessness. The authors state the detection was retrospective. They state that the study collects data to measure false-positive rates for a future live system. Companion papers from the same program report 98% sensitivity in induced circulatory arrests (DETECT-1a). They report external validation in 50 patients with induced VT/VF (DETECT-1b, April 2026). They report 100% sensitivity (23 of 23) with one false positive in true non-shockable arrests after withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment. That paper (Lancet Regional Health Europe, July 2026) describes the algorithm as rule-based. The patient's survival is attributable to the ICD. The wristband changed nothing for him.",

The wristband changed nothing for him."
