"account": "Joy S. Elliott of Riverside Family Medicine Medical Center, Newport News, Virginia, and Andrew H. Hagen of Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Blacksburg, Virginia, reported a case. It appeared in Osteopathic Family Physician (volume 18, number 3, Summer 2026, pages 56–59), published 24 July 2026. The event dates are not given. The patient is a 59-year-old man with two years of weekly episodes of fast heart rate, palpitations and fatigue, lasting up to 24 hours. He had documented several episodes through his smartphone using a consumer wearable device. A cardiologist friend had judged them paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF), but he had not sought formal evaluation. At the family medicine clinic his examination and bloods were normal. Initial management used the wearable for ambulatory rhythm monitoring to separate AF from premature beats. A confirmed episode lasting several hours prompted laboratory work-up and cardiology referral. Echocardiography showed a 4.1 cm aortic root and ascending aorta with normal ventricular function. Thirty-day monitoring was recommended. Because the wearable's rhythm strips already documented paroxysmal AF, his care went straight to treatment options. He chose pulmonary vein isolation ablation and reported dramatic improvement. He had one recurrence while skiing that responded to flecainide. At follow-up he was asymptomatic and AF-free without antiarrhythmic drugs, declining anticoagulation at a CHA2DS2-VASc score of 1. The device's brand is not named. The PDF was downloadable from the ACOFP site, although the article page says membership is required.",

The PDF was downloadable from the ACOFP site, although the article page says membership is required."
