"account": "Guynn, Regis, Eckert, D'souza, Turbow, Westerman, Sperling and Lloyd are in Emory University School of Medicine's Division of Cardiology, Atlanta. They reported in JACC: Case Reports (published online 12 March 2025; event dates not reported) on a 64-year-old man. He had a bioprosthetic aortic valve replaced at 55 and a month of intermittent palpitations and near-syncope. During symptoms he used his smartwatch's electrocardiogram (ECG) function. The watch captured a 10-second single-lead ECG and reported a heart rate above 150 beats/min, warning him to speak to a doctor. The tracing showed wide complex tachycardia at 165 beats/min. On admission he was in sinus rhythm at 77 bpm. But telemetry and ECG caught multiple episodes of monomorphic ventricular tachycardia, and he went to intensive cardiac care. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) suggested scar or late myocarditis at the basal septum. An electrophysiology study found easily inducible VT. A secondary-prevention ICD was implanted and he was discharged on metoprolol, spironolactone and dapagliflozin. Three months later the ICD shocked him for VT. Device interrogation showed pace-terminated episodes, some degenerating into ventricular fibrillation. Successful ablation below the aortic prosthesis followed, with no further VT on serial interrogations. The authors write VT would have gone undiagnosed had the clinician not considered the smartwatch data. The watch's brand and model are unstated.",

"summary": "A smartwatch ECG recorded a 165 bpm wide-complex tachycardia during palpitations; VT was confirmed on telemetry, an ICD placed and later shocked VT, and ablation stopped the VT (JACC Case Rep 2025).",
"account": "Guynn, Regis, Eckert, D'souza, Turbow, Westerman, Sperling and Lloyd are in Emory University School of Medicine's Division of Cardiology, Atlanta. The watch's brand and model are unstated."
