"account": "At Stanford University, a participant with bulbar-onset amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (identified in news reports as Pat Bennett, 68) had four 64-electrode arrays implanted. They went into ventral premotor cortex (area 6v) and area 44 under the BrainGate2 trial. Stanford's release dates the surgery to 29 March 2022. A recurrent neural network (RNN) converted her neural activity into phoneme probabilities and a 125,000-word language model assembled sentences. She produced text at 62 words per minute (Willett et al., Nature, 23 August 2023). The word error rate was 9.1% on a 50-word vocabulary and 23.8% on the full vocabulary. The work was described as a proof of concept in research sessions. The paper dates sessions by post-implant day (119, 136 and 141 for the reported data), not calendar date. The Stanford release says research sessions began about a month after the 29 March 2022 surgery. It says 62 words per minute came after four months. That places the result in about August 2022, so 1 August 2022 is used as the observation date.",

That places the result in about August 2022, so 1 August 2022 is used as the observation date."
